Character and Indulgence

Character: The Power of Association

Our character is influenced directly or indirectly by those we associate with. There is a transfer of traits between two people, and this happens subconsciously. After being with someone for a long time, we begin to act like them. “He that walks with wise men shall be wise…” Pro. 11:15. God wants us to be like Him, to act like Him, to desire what He desires. He wants us to be an embodiment of His personality. This is why He calls us to His presence to abide with Him.

The depth of our character is judged by others by the people we move with. Evil associations corrupt our godly characters, as they mock the very faith we stand on. The paths of the wicked is slippery and leads to destruction. But God Himself wants us to grow by association with others who love Him. Let’s us then be mindful of the associations we keep because they mold us to become people of great character or otherwise.

– Let’s walk in the way of good men and keep the paths of the righteous. There are people who have gone ahead of us that can hold our hands through the narrow road.
– Let’s be companions of all them that fear God and keep His word. Their love for God will induce us to love God. Then our feet will be kept from slipping as they watch us to correct us.
– Let’s continue steadfastly with the brethren in communion and prayers. We must never underestimate the grace God releases on us when we gather together for fellowship.
– Consider the needy.
